What is a PDO thread lift?
A PDO thread lift uses fine, dissolvable threads made from polydioxanone, a material with a long history of use in medical sutures. The threads are placed just beneath the skin to gently lift and support areas that have started to soften or sag. As they dissolve over the following months, they are designed to encourage your skin to produce new collagen, which can help maintain firmness and support.
At A Aesthetics, our medical team offers the PDO thread lift in Coleraine and Derry/Londonderry for the mid-cheeks, nasolabial and marionette areas, jowls and jawline, and neck. It is a non-surgical option for people who want a subtle lift without a surgical recovery, and it can work well alongside dermal filler for a fuller rejuvenation.
What a PDO thread lift can help with
Threads suit mild to moderate softening of the face and neck, particularly where skin has lost some firmness. Your practitioner will assess whether threads, filler or a combination will give you the most natural result.
How a PDO thread lift works
Threads work in two ways: an immediate structural lift, and a gradual improvement in skin quality as they dissolve.
Lifting and repositioning
Barbed threads are placed through tiny entry points beneath the skin, where they hold softened tissue in a lifted position.
Stimulating collagen
As your body gradually absorbs the threads, they are designed to prompt new collagen to form around them, helping create a supportive framework within the skin.
Tightening over time
Skin firmness and texture can continue to improve over the following months, so results develop naturally rather than looking sudden.
Your PDO thread lift, step by step
Consultation
We assess your facial structure and skin, talk through your goals and medical history, and explain what threads can and cannot achieve. Your consultation is complimentary.
Mapping and numbing
Your practitioner marks where the threads will be placed, cleanses the skin and applies local anaesthetic so you stay comfortable.
Your treatment
The threads are placed beneath the skin with a fine cannula or needle and gently adjusted to lift the tissue. You may feel pressure and a tugging sensation.
Aftercare and results
Expect some swelling, tenderness or bruising for 1 to 2 weeks. We give you clear aftercare advice and review you as the lift settles and collagen builds.

PDO thread lift FAQs
Does a thread lift hurt?
We use local anaesthetic, so most people feel pressure and a pulling sensation rather than pain. The treated area can feel tender for a few days afterwards.
Is there any downtime?
Allow 1 to 2 weeks for swelling, bruising and tenderness to settle. You may notice slight puckering or tightness at first, which usually eases as the threads settle. We will ask you to avoid strenuous exercise, wide mouth movements and facial massage for a short time.
When will I see results?
You will usually see some lift straight away, although early swelling can mask it. The result can continue to improve over the following months as new collagen forms.
How long do results last?
Results typically last 12 to 18 months, depending on your skin, age and lifestyle. The threads themselves dissolve, but the collagen they stimulate may help support the skin for longer.
Is a thread lift the same as a facelift?
No. Threads can give a subtle, natural-looking lift without surgery or a long recovery, and they suit mild to moderate sagging. For more significant laxity, we will talk honestly about what threads can achieve.
Who should not have a PDO thread lift?
Threads are not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an active skin infection, with certain bleeding or autoimmune conditions, or where skin is very thin or heavily sagging. We review your medical history carefully at your consultation.
Can threads be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Threads can lift, while dermal filler can restore volume and Secret PRO or polynucleotides can improve skin quality. We will plan the right order and timing for you.
