Help for teeth grinding and jaw clenching
Teeth grinding and jaw clenching, known as bruxism, often happen during sleep or at times of stress. Over time the powerful masseter muscles at the angle of the jaw can become overworked, which may lead to jaw ache, tension headaches and worn teeth. You can read more about teeth grinding and bruxism.
At A Aesthetics, your care starts with a face-to-face consultation in Coleraine or Derry/Londonderry with our doctor or one of our nurse prescribers. They will assess your jaw muscles, review your history and talk you through the options, which can sit alongside advice from your dentist, such as wearing a night guard. Where a prescription treatment is appropriate, it is only ever prescribed after this consultation.
Who this consultation is for
This consultation is for adults with symptoms linked to clenching and grinding. We will ask about your symptoms and any advice you have already had from your dentist. If you have not already done so, please see your dentist, as grinding can have several causes and may need dental care.
How we approach teeth grinding
The masseter is a powerful chewing muscle, and when it is overworked it can ache and feel tight. Our starting point is understanding what is driving your grinding.
A proper medical assessment
We ask about your symptoms, sleep, stress and any dental advice you have had, and we examine the jaw muscles to see how they are working.
Working alongside your dentist
Protecting your teeth comes first, so anything we suggest is designed to sit alongside your dentist’s care, such as a mouthguard.
A plan you are comfortable with
You decide what happens next, with no pressure. If treatment with us is not right for you, we will say so and point you in the right direction.
Your consultation, step by step
Consultation
A doctor or nurse prescriber reviews your symptoms and medical history face to face. Your consultation is complimentary.
Assessment
We ask you to clench your teeth so we can feel the masseter muscles and see how hard they are working on each side.
Your options
We explain the options that are suitable for you, what each involves and what you can realistically expect, so you can make an informed choice.
Follow-up
If you go ahead with treatment, we arrange a review to check how you are getting on and answer any questions.

Teeth grinding FAQs
What happens at the consultation?
You sit down with our doctor or one of our nurse prescribers, who will ask about your symptoms, your medical history and what you have already tried. You leave with an honest plan, which may or may not include treatment with us.
Is the consultation free?
Yes. Your consultation is complimentary, with no obligation to book anything afterwards.
What treatment options might be discussed?
That depends on your assessment. We will talk through the options that are suitable for you, including self-care and the alternatives. Some options are prescription-only, and these can only be offered after a face-to-face consultation with a prescriber.
Do I need to see my dentist first?
We recommend it. Grinding can have several causes and can damage your teeth, so your dentist should check them and may suggest a mouthguard. Anything we offer is designed to sit alongside that care.
Is treatment suitable for everyone?
No. Suitability depends on your medical history, any medication you take, and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Treatments are for adults aged 18 and over, and our medical team will only recommend something if it is right for you.
How do I book?
Start with a complimentary consultation at our Coleraine or Derry/Londonderry clinic, or call us on 028 7051 2101.
